I have seen in quite a few places downs the years of the all knowing person. The person who has become so internal to an agency or company that nearly every person in the office will at some point during the day/week come to them. Now this is a great feeling to have, I myself have had that feeling.

You feel important and a real integral person to the place you are working. Any issues and you are the first point of call because you will have an answer. People gravitate to the person who has the answer.

However, have you been eyeing up that promotion that's just been advertised internally? You do deserve more money for your role and your next review is not for at least 5 months. Well you may find your employers not risking a good working thing.

"If it ain't broke don't fix it" and "You do it so well, we just wouldn't be able to replace you" would be their way of thinking. Now this may not happen for all but if it does, be wary. You are then fixed in place in the eyes of your employers. That promotion is going to derek, and derek is a shit. He rarely does his job, and he leaves early on tuesdays!

Do not become irreplaceable, you will never progress.

How do you prevent this?

Well that is a very good question and is quite difficult to give an appropriate and helpful answer. To avoid it in the first place is silly as you are learning and growing in your career and as a person. Before you realise it you have become irreplaceable. But if it ever happens and you find yourself stuck?

You have a few options:

  • Speak directly with your employers/line manager to explain that you wish to progress and not be stuck in your role
  • Move on. Find a new place that hopefully will not have the same restrictions
  • Switch careers and become a watch maker, they have no problems other than watches.

Before jumping the gun, you may also love this feeling and if so then good for you! It is a great feeling and if you are content and happy where you are then I say stay happy.

Thanks for reading you beautiful person.
